For the 10th article in the “Trail of the Month” series, HRTPO investigated the Airport Road Trail in York County north of Colonial Williamsburg. The paved path provides access to Waller Mill Park and a connection between Mooretown Road and Rochambeau Road.

Built largely in an abandoned railroad right-of-way parallel to Airport Road, the path is mostly flat and easy to traverse. Due to trees providing shade and Waller Mill Reservoir providing views, the trail is pleasant to travel.

The Airport Road Trail is an important part of the bike/pedestrian network in the area north of Colonial Williamsburg. (For safety and comfort, note the gaps in this network, as shown in red.) The bike lanes and paths in the vicinity are the result of decades of effort by Williamsburg, James City County, and York County.

If coming from far away to ride the Airport Road Trail, one can drive to Waller Mill Park (901 Airport Road, $2 fee), and then walk or bike to the Airport Road Trail at the entrance to the park.
The park has three hiking trails (not for bikes) as shown below.
