As the region’s Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), the Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization (HRTPO) is responsible for developing, approving, and maintaining a fiscally constrained Long-Range Transportation Plan (LRTP). The LRTP, with a planning horizon of at least 20 years, serves as a blueprint for enhancing the region’s multimodal transportation system. It is periodically updated to reflect evolving conditions such as new priorities, population growth, economic shifts, and anticipated travel demand.
HRTPO staff has been working with regional stakeholders, including the public, to update the LRTP to the horizon year of 2050. Together, we have developed a draft list of candidate transportation projects for evaluation. These projects will be analyzed across multiple future scenarios to identify those that offer the greatest benefits to the region, regardless of future conditions. This approach ensures we prioritize smart investments for Hampton Roads.
