HRPDC Endorses Two Proposals for GO Virginia Funding

At its September 2017 meeting, the HRPDC endorsed two project proposals for GO Virginia funding consideration:

  • Hampton Roads Unmanned Systems, Testing, Demonstration and Recreation Facility,  and
  • Hampton Roads Regional Broadband Initiative.

With the Board’s endorsements, HRPDC staff will now assist in preparing the applications for GO Virginia funding.

GO Virginia is a state funding program intended to create jobs. Initiated by Virginia’s leaders of business and industry, GO Virginia fosters private-sector growth and job creation through state incentives for regional collaboration by business, education, and government.  GO Virginia divides the state into nine (9) regions, Hampton Roads is Region 5 and includes the cities of Chesapeake, Franklin, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Poquoson, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, and Williamsburg; and the counties of Accomack, Isle of Wight, James City, Northampton, Southampton, and York.

Each Region identified industry clusters in which to develop projects that will encourage job growth. Region 5’s industry clusters are: the port, advanced manufacturing, cybersecurity and data analytics, shipbuilding and repair, water technologies and unmanned (drone) systems and aerospace. Proposed GO Virginia projects will be scored and compete for funding on a statewide and/or regional level. Both projects endorsed by the HRPDC will be seeking funding from the statewide and regional funding pools.

Project proposals are due to the State GO Virginia board by the end of October.
